Previous experience:
TimberED Services has been involved in the investigation of damage caused by severe wind events such as cyclones and tornados in many parts of Australia, often in conjunction with James Cook University Cyclone Testing Station. In each case a detailed structural inspection is undertaken followed by a comprehensive report that describes failure mechanisms, and provides recommendations for reconstruction, retrofitting, and where appropriate advises changes to the Australian Codes and Standards. The findings have also been presented at workshops and seminars.
Geoff has prepared damage assessment reports following a number of Australian wind events such as tropical cyclones Kathy (Borroloola 1982), Connie (Port Hedland 1985), Orson (Karratha 1987), Vance (Exmouth 1999), Larry (Innisfail 2006) and George (Port Hedland 2007). TimberED has undertaken damage investigations following tornados in Mandurah, Bunbury, Wellington Mills and several in the Perth metropolitan area.
Previous contracts with UNDP on the provision of low cost cyclone and earthquake resistant housing have taken Geoff to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, China, Papua and New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Western Samoa and New Zealand. This work included running courses and seminars, performing damage investigations and the completion of a regional Typhoon Damage Assessment matrix. TimberED Services also compiled a manual on retrofitting (connection details) of older housing to resist wind damage in Tonga.
Geoff has been a member of the joint AS/NZS committee on loadings BD/6 and on a sub-committee for wind loads BD/6/2. He has also contributed to the revision of the ISO loading standards.
TimberED Services has been engaged to develop components of Building Codes for Tonga and to perform wind damage risk assessments on the entire housing stock in a mining town.
